Who has a greater risk of having severe COVID-19 symptoms?

Anyone can get COVID-19. Fortunately about 90% of people will have mild symptoms with COVID19. Serious infections have been seen in most age groups, however, some groups do appear to be at higher risk of having a severe COVID infection. Those groups include:

  • Adults age 70 and older

  • People with chronic lung disease, such as COPD, asthma, and fibrosis

  • People with other chronic conditions (heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, body mass index 40 kg/m2 or higher)

  • People who have impaired immune system function

  • Including: those receiving cancer treatment, people who have received bone marrow or organ transplantation, and people who have AIDS
